Overlooked Father Figure: The Stepdad
This is my Stepdad but I call him Pops. My Mom was my hero but it was this man who saved me. He STEPPED UP & came into my life at a time when I desperately needed him. He took on the role of “Dad” even when he didn’t have to. Early on, I had my guard up. I remember meeting him for the first time and thinking to myself, “Who does this guy think he is? I’m the only MAN (I was 7) my mama needs!.” But as I look back & think about my life up to now, I’m just so thankful. He truly is one of the major role models in my life and I’ve grown to appreciate him more & more each day.
My Pops has been through a lot in his life. When my mom was battling cancer, he was at her side through it all, doing everything he could to make her feel better because that was his wife, and he was in love with her. And you know what? I’ve never once heard him complain. I never heard him worry & I never saw him feeling sorry for himself. Through him, I found strength, respect, and the example of what it means to be a husband and what it means to be a man.
I will never have enough words to explain how grateful I am for this man, which is why I’m attempting to write this right now. I just wanted to say ... Thanks. Thanks for being you. Thanks for being strong. Thanks for loving me. Thanks for loving my mom. Thanks for giving me my little brother. And most importantly, Thanks for being my dad.
To all the Stepdads in the world - It takes a special kind of human to love another as if they are their own. They may not appreciate you now, but one day they will. Thank you for STEPPING UP!
